About Sharon
Born: Bermuda 1954.
I am the artist formerly known as Sharon Wilson. I live in Bermuda. I am an illustrator and a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Massachusetts. That was more than forty years ago, and to this very day, telling the “story” is my reason for painting. Forty years ago, the stories I told were very personal. Today I recognise them to be universal. My paintings are candid slices of time. My paintings are intended to encourage, remind, and teach. In this crazy world, we need a staple diet of images that have the power to “call us back to sanity” and to grow our humanity. I depict us exercising patience with each other and our children, respecting our elderly and our beauty. Beauty that is derived from our behaviour and not from our looks or dress.
Did I mention that I taught in public schools? I did. Children taught me the power of images. Quality imagery can positively affect our thinking and behaviour, no matter our age. It creates a mood in our living spaces. It reminds us of who we want to be.
Presently I work in the medium of encaustic, which is molten beeswax with pigment. It resembles oil paint. I can remember praying that one day, I would be skilful enough to tell our story in a way that dignifies and uplifts. I don’t know when it happened, but it did. For this, I am very grateful. ‘The world doesn’t need another pretty picture. It needs imagery with the power to bring forth the humanity in us’ Sharon A Muhammad.
